I am happy to introduce Christina Dimitriadis, our fabulous Senior Project Manager, who is guest starring today as our blog master. I have great respect for Christina for many reasons, but I admire that she always takes the time to volunteer and to give back even though she is always busier than a hornet! BRAVO, Christina, and thank you!

For the most part, art and design are visually driven concepts. We at David Stark enjoy blogging about artists and their work and our company prides itself on designing visually stimulating event environments. But the gift of "being visual" i.e. sight, is just that.
The twist on this post is that it features an incredible group of guys whose daily lives rely more heavily upon other senses. The New York Knights are our local goalball team. Goalball is a sport for athletes who are blind / visually impaired. The object is to roll the ball into the opponents’ goal while the opposing team tries to block the ball with their bodies. Bells inside the ball help to orient the players, indicating the direction and speed of the oncoming ball. But this description does it no justice. These guys aren't really "rolling" the ball, they are whipping it with incredible strength and "blocking" is really bracing themselves for some part of their body to stop the speeding ball.
So if you are ever looking for an amazing way to spend a Saturday, you can join them in Brooklyn for their weekly practice. Unlike other sports, they rely on volunteer refs to call the game. They can't see if another player fouls, they need people to retrieve loose balls and the mere act of identifying a goal requires a sighted person. It's super easy to get involved via New York Cares and it would be great to see some of the David Stark extended family when practices resume in the new year.
X, Christina
