The National Design Awards is one of the events that is so near and dear to my heart. Not only do I adore my buddies at the museum but honoring DESIGN, recognizing how it effects each and every one of us in our everyday occurrences is something that is very important me. So many others agree with me. We had a packed house at Cipriani 42nd Street about three weeks ago!
Inspired by the chic identity materials that Tsang Seymour created for the event in which fine line work defined the planes and angles of the typography, we exploded that concept into three dimensions when thousands of yards of ribbon unfurled from spools at table level to 60 feet in height, accentuating the grand space within the sparest of terms. Greeting the guests upon arrival, a 16 foot tall, open square of ribbon spools referenced the National Design Awards logo while providing a frame in which to view the vista of the dining room beyond.
This décor schematic is a prime example of how effective, how special, how BIG something can feel even when the stroke that you are creating it from is something rather small. I love that mission: Create something from NOTHING. Isn’t that DESIGN after all?
After the gala, all of the ribbon went to Materials for the Arts. Now many not for profit organizations and school groups with tight or non-existent budgets can make a lot of SOMETHING too.
Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists this year and to the Cooper Hewitt Museum that does so much to promote, excite, and raise awareness on the importance of design in all of our lives. I heart you!
