I went to the Brooklyn Museum last Sunday to see the exhibit “Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968.” While I found the exhibition as a whole a bit underwhelming, it did reinvigorate my love for the work of Marisol who is featured front and center in the show.
As a kid, I was transfixed by her “Last Supper” which my parents took me to see again and again at the MET. Over time, I think I was taught (in art school!) that her brand of sculpture was perhaps too easy, but you know what? It’s fabulous and fun and it would make for incredible windows at Bergdorf’s or Barneys. By relegating her art to a store window, I am not denigrating her in any way. Have you seen the windows at either store recently? If that isn’t art, I don’t know what is!
D.
I have always loved her work as well seeing her last supper at the MMA. I don't know about the "easy" comment in regards to her sculpture but have always admired her work and the fact that she has fine details along with unfinished portions showing the process, which is so vital in the creation of art. I think she shows more of the artist's hand in this way. I love it!!
