In party land, people experience over-the-top flowers and candelabras repeatedly to the point where they have very little impact. I tend to avoid the standard candelabra variety because the look, er, RENTAL. And yet, when looking to invoke a world where a naughty French mistress’s boudoir meets a Rococo banquet, you must embrace some of those visual cues, right? The trick to keeping it all cool and modern is to do so with a little wink and a smile.
Inspired by the irony in the works of John Currin and Lisa Yuskavage with a dash of the over-ripeness that oozes in an Arcimboldo painting, we created a pink fantasia of a 50th birthday celebration in the favorite hue of the birthday girl. The space was pink from top to bottom with accents of black and deep wine. A grand lampshade sported the lacing of a sexy corset, suspended over the dance floor while the dining tables mixed two dimensional and three dimensional elements to create a stylized banquet with the ornate and wild whimsy of a dinner for Marie Antoinette herself. All conceived with tons of irony, it worked because the execution was done with great seriousness. This was both lusciously beautiful and FUNNY at the same time. To cap it off, the waiters mysteriously adorned with masks became décor themselves and at midnight, a naughty ”nurse” wheeled in a cart of succulent strawberries each of which she injected with a horse syringe worth of liqueur. OUCH!
