We Partied Like It Was 2008!

As each year comes to a close, I love to look back on all of the projects that we did, and I reflect on all the creative opportunities, challenges, and accomplishments that were achieved by my team during that year. 2008 was a FANTASTIC year – a real doozy of creative trailblazing and, last week at our company holiday party, I presented my annual “year in the life” of David Stark Design and Production to great response. While it would be impossible to share all of the photos here (there were more than 350!), I want to share some of my favorite images from some of my favorite projects that occurred in 2008. I love to see them all together, rather than break them out per event as we normally do, because in this way I get to really examine the threads of thought that run throughout a time period.

Travels in Fontland

I am not a fan of winter and when it starts to get frigid outside, I start to long for the beach and the sun of summers past. Feeling reminiscent, I just found these photos I took this past August on a perfect Sunday in Coney Island. My buddies and I rode our bikes there, making pilgrimage on what was supposed to be the last day the amusement park was going to be open to the public before being shut down for good. What a place!

While I enjoyed it all wildly – from the scary, rickety Cyclone rollercoaster, to the lines of people waiting for Nathan’s hot dogs and cheese fries (thanks, I’ll pass!), the thing I enjoyed most of all was not the rides, but the . . . FONTS. I picked up this art nerd trait of documenting fonts from my buddy Marcia whom I travel often with and who dutifully snaps up signage pics from all over the world. I think combined; we must have quite a collection.

Coney Island signage is specific ONLY to Coney Island. There is no other place that has a look like this. And that’s pretty damn cool, right?!  I hope some smart person or group comes in to save Coney Island to preserve its quirky beauty. Do we really need more cheesy condos there?  REALLY?!
